Castine

A small town I knew nothing of a few days ago, but Castine in Maine was at the border between the growing United States in the late 18th century and the British colony of Canada. It was given up by the British in 1796, 20 years after the Declaration of Independence.

Castine would have been the capital of New Ireland had the British been able to fix the border of Canada further south in the Treaty of Paris in 1814.

Castine remains a smart town with fine buildings in a fine sea shore location.
